Founder Information

Following a chance comment by a friend of a friend, Peter and Laura Carr came across Project Walk.  The lure of a possible improvement in Peter’s condition (or was it the Californian sunshine) led them to trek some 5,500 miles to San Diego in October 2006, exactly one year after Peter was rendered a T6 complete paraplegic by an inconsiderate motorist who knocked him off his motorbike!  They went with hope and trepidation, and to be honest a certain amount of English cynicism, regarding the possibility of ‘recovery’.  They left some two weeks later, inspired both mentally and physically with the additional goal of bringing the concept of Project Walk to the UK.  After two further visits and a fourth  in October 2008, Standing Start opened in the UK on December 1st 2008.

Peter has followed a plan at home, with regular follow-ups by video link and email from Project Walk and his physical and mental gains have been enormous.  Working at Phase I and II of the programme has allowed him to remain free of medication for spasms, with increased muscle tone and bulk.  His core stability has improved his posture and strength.  He is able to pick things up from the floor without holding on to outside structures, he can balance unaided on any surface, his transfers have improved and in an emergency, he has learnt to crawl.  To the able bodied a fairly simple movement, but in the event of a fire, something that could save his life!  In their case Peter and Laura have accepted that Peter will never run round the block or play football again, but their goal is for Peter to stand unaided for transferring in and out of the car, or dressing…..what a difference that would make in life!

Peter has remained extremely healthy, he has had no issues with his skin as he has maintained muscle tone and therefore is not sitting on his bones so much!  He has improved his cardio vascular fitness through the exercise and really enjoys life to the full.  As the Spinal Injuries Association says…life needn’t stop when you’re paralysed!
